Lancaster and Lebanon Counties

There are 104,000 adults in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties who could earn more money by improving their skills (https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/piaac/litproficiencylevel.asp.) The Literacy Council is a place in our community where adult learners can get free education services at sites throughout the two counties.

Gaby's Story Three years ago, Gaby and her mother, Elsa, left Cuba in search of a better life.

Gaby did not speak English and knew that language barriers would keep her from fulfilling her dream of teaching school in her new home. Gaby started out in a beginning English class and quickly earned her way into an academic English class. It wasn't easy. Gaby worked third shift, raced home to shower and then headed out to her class. Her teacher, Jane Myers, recalls Gaby's commitment to learning. "She never missed a class and studied on her own." Today, Gaby is enrolled at Millersville University preparing to become a certified Spanish teacher.
